International Index to Performing Arts is updated with new content every month; this page highlights new feature enhancements and new journals added.

 

New Index Titles

January 2012

Indexing has commenced for two new titles in this release of IIPA: the International Journal of Screendance is a new, artist-led interdisciplinary journal devoted to the emerging field of Screendance, which combines methodologies and approaches from the fields of dance, performance, visual art, cinema and media arts, and is published online by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries and Parallel Press; and the Journal of African Media Studies (Intellect Press) provides a forum for debate on the historical and contemporary aspects of media and communication in Africa.

New Index Title

November 2011

This release of IIPA includes the indexing for Journal of African Cinemas, published by Intellect. The title explores the interactions of visual and verbal narratives, as well as the identity or identities of Africa and its peoples, as represented in African film.

New Full Text Coverage

October 2011

IIPA Full Text now includes selective full-text coverage for Billboard, the premier trade publication for the music business. This matches existing index coverage in the database.

New Index Titles

The latest update to IIPA includes index coverage of three important titles:

  • Dramatherapy, published by the British Association of Dramatherapists, is a psychology-focused journal which presents articles on clinical research, and linking theory and practice, letters and book reviews. Its focus is on the use of healing aspects of drama and theatre in the therapeutic process.
  • Youth Theatre Journal includes articles covering theater and drama education for coving philosophy, history, educational theory, sociology, critical theory, and comparative studies. The journal focuses of the dissemination of ideas relating to practical and theoretical developments in the field of theatre and performance by, with, and for children and youth and drama/theatre education.
  • Theatre, Dance, and Performance Training, which is dedicated to revealing the vital and diverse processes of training and their relationship to performance. The journal's focus is international and interdisciplinary.

New Index and Full Text Title

September 2011

This release of IIPA and IIPA Full Text includes the addition of the French-language title Positif, one of "the most prominent and influential French film criticism journals". The coverage is broad, "with notable films and filmmakers from around the world receiving critical scrutiny". The title includes interviews with major filmmakers, in-depth film reviews, and articles on film history.

New Index Title

June 2011

This release sees one new index title in Sangeet Natak. This journal publishes articles, reviews, and reports dealing chiefly Indian music, dance, theatre, culture and aims to promote and disseminate knowledge in these subjects.

March 2011

This release sees the addition of selective indexing and full-text coverage of The ICHPER-SD Journal of Research in Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport & Dance. Published by the International Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, Sport, and Dance the title is aimed at professors, teachers, researchers, coaches, educators and administrators in these fields.

February 2011

We have added one new journal with selective indexing to IIPA and IIPA Full Text: The Brecht Yearbook includes articles on the German author's plays and as well as production reviews.

New Index and Full-Text Titles

October 2010

This release of IIPA and IIPA Full Text sees new index and full-text coverage respectively for Screen International, the leading film industry resource for international film markets. The title provides perspectives from the most knowledgeable writers and data analysts in the business, and delivers opinion and commentary on the issues, people and products shaping the worldwide film industry. We have also added new index and full-text coverage of Critical Studies in Television, published by Manchester University Press.

New index-only titles in IIPA include Journal of Radio and Audio Media (former named The Journal of Radio Studies), and The Journal of Religion and Theatre. As part of our commitment to continue to expand international coverage, we have added indexing for Sruti, "India's premier magazine for the performing arts", which covers classical Indian dance, music and theatre.

New Index Title

September 2010

Theatre, Dance and Performance Training (TDPT) is a new, peer-reviewed journal which acts as a research forum for practitioners, academics, creative artists and pedagogues interested in training in all its complexity, and how the diverse processes of training relate to performance.

New Full-Text Titles

August 2010

IIPA Full Text now includes full text for two titles which were previously index only, with selective coverage: Utne Reader, which covers alternative culture, with reviews and criticism of the performing arts; and The Word, described as "a literary rock and roll title", with coverage of film and television.

New Index and Full-Text Titles

June 2010

Themes in Theatre, which was previously index only, has now had full text added. Published in association with the International Federation for Theatre Research/Fédération Internationale pour la Recherche Théâtrale, this title reflects diverse contemporary issues and current scholarship within international theatre studies. We are also providing selective indexing and full text coverage of relevant articles from Journal of Arts Management, Law, and Society.

New Index and Full-Text Titles

June 2010

The latest release of IIPA sees one new full text title: The Contemporary Cinema series focuses on the latest in film culture, theory, reception and interpretation, with particular emphasis on films released in the past fifteen years. Also newly indexed in IIPA is Themes in Theatre. Published in association with the International Federation for Theatre Research/Fédération Internationale pour la Recherche Théâtrale, this title reflects diverse contemporary issues and current scholarship within international theatre studies.

New Index and Full-Text Titles

May 2010

IIPA now offers new indexing for The Word. Covering British popular culture, the title is indexed from February 2010. Also newly-indexed in IIPA is tanz_Zeitschrift für Ballett, Tanz und Performance, formed by the merger of Ballettanz and Tanz Journal. In addition, Storytelling, a journal dedicated to analyses of popular, film, music, television, and other areas, is now available with index and full text coverage in IIPA and IIPA Full Text respectively.

New Full-Text Titles

April 2010

We have included three new titles in this release of IIPA and IIPA Full Text. Music, Sound, and the Moving Image is published by Liverpool University Press and is the first international scholarly journal devoted to the study of the interaction between music and sound within the entirety of moving image media including film, television, music video, advertising, computer games, mixed-media installation and digital art. Pointe, subtitled "Ballet at its best", is international in scope and provides an insight to the world of ballet, with behind-the-scene looks at the ballet companies, focus on individual dancers, and technical and career information for ballet students. Science Fiction Film and Television covers film studies, science fiction studies, and television studies.

IIPA now includes one new indexed title; Teaching Theatre. The journal of the Educational Theatre Association based in Cincinnati, it contains articles on the teaching of acting, directing and playwriting. IIPA now features indexing from the Spring 2008 issue of this journal onwards.

This release of IIPA and IIPA Full Text sees the addition of one new index and full text title. About Performance is the journal of the Department of Performance Studies at the University of Sydney and covers the phenomenon of performance and the processes involved in its production and reception in the broadest possible way. IIPA and IIPA Full Text now contain index records and full text from the current issue onwards.

Subscribers to IIPA Full Text can access one new title in this release. The American Journal of Dance Therapy has been indexed in IIPA since March 1996 (18:1) and full text has now been added from June 2008 (30:1) onwards.

For subscribers of IIPA Full Text, one title that was previously index only has now had full text added. The Stage, an important weekly newspaper for the entertainment industry in Britain, now has full text available for issues published from September 2009 onwards.

For subscribers of IIPA Full Text, one title that was previously index only has now had full text added. Back Stage - National Edition is published by Nielsen Business Media and full text is now available for issues published from October 2008 onwards. In addition, two new index titles are available in IIPA and IIPA Full Text this month. International Arts Manager, indexed from October 2004 onwards, covers news and features relating to the performing arts and was absorbed by Gig in 2006. We are also pleased to announce the inclusion of index records from March 2009 onwards for The Stage, an important weekly newspaper for the entertainment industry in Britain.

One new title has been added to IIPA Full Text this month. Caribbean Quarterly published by the University of the West Indies has been indexed selectively in IIPA since June 1999 (45:2-3). Full text has been added from March 2004 onwards and articles available cover a range of performing arts related subjects including theatre, dance, media and television in the context of Caribbean teaching and culture.

There is one new index and full text title in IIPA and IIPA Full Text this month. Covering Spanish, Latin American and US Latino theater, Gestos is an English and Spanish language title and issues are available from 2004 onwards.

Two Cambridge University Press titles that were previously index only have been added in full text to IIPA Full Text this month. NTQ - New Theatre Quarterly (full text from 2002 onwards) and Theatre Research International (full text from 2001 onwards) are already indexed in IIPA from 1998 and 1975 (first issue) respectively. This brings the total number of full text journals to 99.

Two new index titles, Discourses in Dance published by the Laban Centre and Gig are available in IIPA and IIPA Full Text this month. There are now 256 titles available on the subject of the performing arts.

One new journal, Shakespeare in Southern Africa has been included in IIPA and IIPA Full Text this month bringing the total number of full text titles to 98 and the total number of indexed titles to 254.

Every month, IIPA and IIPA Full Text are updated with new citation records and full text articles. There are now over 460,000 citation records from articles found in 253 titles. In addition, customers who subscribe to the full text version of IIPA will see 95 journals are now available to search and browse in full text.

Email alerts

April 2008

Users of IIPA can now chose to receive a customized email update when articles and journals are available in the service. Users can select to be alerted when a journal has a new issue added or have their search run again every time new content is available. To set up alerts, simply click on the 'Set up alert' link on the right hand toolbar of the search results.

Updates to the title spreadsheet

We have made some additions to the IIPA title spreadsheet in order to help librarians and users to evaluate the contents of the database. We now include subjects covered for all titles so that it is easy to see the wide range of subject coverage of IIPA. We also now indicate when a title has been selectively indexed. More information about selective indexing is available here.

If you have access to JSTOR and would like to enable these links from IIPA, go to the Customization page in the Administration Resources area of the site (password protected) and select the checkbox next to JSTOR linking and click on the 'Submit' button.

New journals added

January 2008

Two new journals have been indexed and added to the January release of IIPA. These are Magic, Ritual, and Witchcraft and Theatre Symposium: A Journal of the Southeastern Theatre Conference. Customers with access to IIPA Full Text will also see these titles in full text. There are now 252 indexed titles in the database and 95 in full text covering all areas relating to performing arts, from screenwriting to sound engineering and from film music to folklore.

New design and functionality now live!

The International Index to Performing Arts has a new look - and vastly improved functionality. We invite you to explore the site to discover the new features. Here are some highlights:

  • To get an overview of the main areas of the resource, view the product demo.
  • On the Search Articles page, you can now limit keyword searches to citations only or to article full text only in order to perform more focused searches. Results can be sorted by relevance, oldest or most recent record first, and alphabetically by journal title. Sophisticated filters make it easy to narrow down the results and find relevant entries.
  • To save records and searches for future use, create a My Archive profile. You can log in at any time to add or delete items.
  • Subscribe to RSS feeds in the What's New area to receive regular product updates, such as information about new journals and functionality.

Improved design and functionality coming in July

The International Index to Performing Arts is undergoing an upgrade. The new interface will feature many significant improvements:

  • Switch to the FAST platform to enable faster and more powerful searches.
  • Instant filtering and sorting of results.
  • Addition of My Archive to allow users to save searches and records for future reference.
  • Ability to limit keyword searches to citations only to obtain targeted results.
  • RSS feeds.

Watch out for these exciting features and a new design in mid-July!

To see how the new interface will work, you can view the demo for the Music & Performing Arts Online portal. This portal facilitates the cross-searching of the International Index to Performing Arts and the International Index to Music Periodicals and will have the same functionality as IIPA.

June 2007

IIPA features a new indexed title from Spain: Scherzo: Revista de Música. Also note that Entertainment Design and Lighting Dimensions have merged, and the content can now be accessed under the title Live Design.

Two additional journals are now being indexed in IIPA-Produced By (USA) and Screen Education (Australia)-bringing the total number of indexed titles up to 244. IIPA now offers access to over 400,000 citations, and there are 22 journal titles with citation coverage going back to the first issue published. New content continues to be added every month.

IIPA is updated with new content every month. IIPA now gives access to a total of 242 indexed titles. The resource includes over 385,000 citations with coverage as early as 1864. In addition, there are 22 indexed titles which offer extensive citation coverage from the first issue published.

Improved navigation on Browse Journals

IIPA now offers one A-Z page in order to facilitate browsing. Users can simply click on the hyperlinked letter at the top of the Browse Journals page in order to go straight to the list of journal titles beginning with that letter.

New citation field

IIPA now displays an E-journals field in the full bibliographic records which contains a link direct to the relevant article when it is available on an online publisher's own website.

Seven new journals have been indexed in IIPA bringing the total to 241. These are Cine Cubano, Framework, Film Studies, Nineteenth Century Theatre and Film, Slavic and East European Performance, Visual Culture in Britain, Western European Stages.
