You can search International Index to Performing Arts using a combination of the following fields:

How do I find information quickly?

Use the Keyword field to find all articles containing a single word or phrase:

The keyword search covers all fields within an article except the publication date.

How do I perform more complex searches?

Limiting your search

You can limit your search so that you gain more precise results and obtain the type of articles you require.

Note: all of these options are unchecked by default.

To search for articles by title

To search for articles by a particular author

Note: when selecting from a list of authors, the authors are listed in the format: surname, forename e.g. Aronson, Arnold.

To search for articles on a particular subject

Broad Subject covers general categories e.g. film whilst Narrow Subject covers more specific terms e.g. production companies.

Note: Searches records from 1998 forward.

To search for for a particular type of document

To search for articles containing special features

Note: by default these checkboxes are shown unchecked and will not be included in the search.

To search for articles from a specific publication i.e. journal

Note: searches within this field will return results where the 'alternative title' also matches the criteria. Alternative titles exist where a publication has changed its name over the course of its lifetime.

To search for articles written in a different language

To search for articles published in a particular country

To search for articles by publication date

Note: to search for a single year either enter the same year into both boxes or a year into one box and leave the other one blank.

To search for articles by ISSN

Each journal has an ISSN, if you know the ISSN for a journal:

To search for articles by IIPA Citation Number

Each article has an individual citation number, if you know the citation number for an article:

You must enter the prefix iipa before the number as shown.

Note: there is no longer a special search box for citation numbers, the Search Articles keyword box searches the citation number field within the full citation.

Search Tips

If you enter multiple keywords e.g. ballet choreography into any of the search boxes (except ISSN) they will be joined together by the boolean operator AND e.g. ballet AND choreography. This will return results containing the word "ballet" and the word "choreography".

To search for an exact phrase enter the words in quotation marks e.g. "Cecchetti method".

If you wish to search for a phrase containing a reserved term such as and, or, not e.g. hue and cry you should enter the words in quotation marks e.g. "hue and cry".

You can use other Boolean and proximity operators to combine search terms.

How do I organize the results of my search?

Sorting results

The sort order can be chosen either on the Search Articles page before the search is run or afterwards from the Article Search Results page. By default your results will be returned in relevance order. Choose an option from the Sort results drop-down list. Search results can be sorted in one of four ways:

Displaying results

You can choose whether to display 50 or 100 entries on the Article Search Results page using the Display radio buttons:

You can change this on the results page too - the number will persist throughout your session or until you change it again. By default 50 results will display per page.

Submitting a search

When you have finished entering your search terms and making your selections, click the Search button next to the Keyword field or at the bottom of the page. The Article Search Results page will appear displaying the results of your search.

If you want to clear all search boxes and begin a completely new search, click on the Clear search link at the bottom of the page.

Note: Between search boxes, all terms are treated by default as if they were combined using the Boolean operator AND.
